HAPPY hour will be replaced by nappy hour at one York pub next month when a new group for mums and babies is launched.

New parents in Bishophill have teamed up to set up the weekly group at The Golden Ball, on the corner of Cromwell Road and Victor Street.

Organiser and local resident Rachel Cole, mum of five-month-old Darcey, said: “We wanted to start something in the community for local people. I do not think there is very much in our area and this is a way for people to get out and about and chat with others.”

She said she had opened the idea up to other parents, grandparents and parents-to-be, and said there had been a good response.

“We have already got about ten people involved and a lot of people like the idea that in the summer, we can decamp across the road to the community garden and put blankets down,” she said.

The mums and babies group will meet on Thursday mornings before the pub opens to regular customers and is the latest new venture at The Golden Ball, which last autumn became the first pub in York to be owned by the local community. It has already formed its own choir and a craft group, displays local artists’ work and sells fresh bread every Saturday, and there are plans to launch a bar billiards team. Rachel said she came up with the idea for the group last autumn, when ideas for the pub were being mooted.

Anyone interested in joining the group should phone the pub on 01904 652211 or search for the “York MUMbler” group on facebook.

This is yet another great idea to use a facility that already exists in the community....well done to the mother and toddler group and to the Golden Ball, maybe other pubs could take leaf from your book and make the local pub the heart of the community.
I wish you well with all your ventures.

I'm sure there is some sort of joke about boys along the lines of "once they've come out of there, they spend the rest of their lives trying to get back in again." Can't think what it might be about?

That's a very sexist comment, alfie!

Are you still living in the dark ages? Or are you a natural born misogynist? Sorry, I shouldn't use big words for neanderthals!
It's called humour. You should try in sometime.

I do have a sense of humour but Alfie's comment is not funny. Since when has sexism ever been funny?
I guess you don't think it's ok for women to make sexist jokes then? Like 'Man-Flu' Shock horror!!!

Lighten up.

Now, i`m not one to cause an argument or anything like that, i`m 86 years old, but this whole article is sexist. It clearly says `mums` and babies, now what about the `dads`? Some poor fella could want to join and he`ll feel that he can`t, or is that the idea?

Fair point. Well said Mr Cronin.

Sexism is everywhere. Whether intentional or unintentional, humorous or not. Maybe Murphy the Spangle should look at some of the old seaside post cards of yesteryear. Sexism has been used in light humour for a very long time. It's about time he got used to it.
