Deadline for York volunteer awards

YOUNG volunteers have until Friday if they want to apply for the Lord Mayor of York Young Volunteers Award, aimed at recognising the contribution they make to York’s communities.

Last year, more than 180 young people received the award or activities including providing entertainment at a local elderly resident’s home, mentoring younger students through their exams, and helping disabled children engage in sports and crafts activities.

Laura Pegg, aged 17, who attends Bootham School and is applying for the award this year, helps with Brownies, Rainbows and Girl Guides, as well as listening to readers at a local primary school. She said: “It is wonderful to be acknowledged for the work that we do, especially at a higher level.”

Young people can pick up an application form from York CVS on Priory Street, or visit yorkcvs.org.uk/mayoraward to either apply on-line or download a form.
