THIS picture shows an accident on a North Yorkshire road this morning - from which the driver remarkably escaped without serious injury.

After hitting a patch of ice or snow on the A59 near Menwith Hill, the car veered across the road into the path of a van at about 9.30am today.

The driver of the car, who is in his fifties and from Scarborough, did not suffer sugnificant injury and the driver of the van was unharmed, police said.

Traffic Sergeant Paul Cording of the North Yorkshire Roads Policing Group, said: “Amazingly the chap was taken to hospital with cuts on his hands and that’s it. He is a very lucky person.”

He said that while road conditions were beginning to improve, drivers should be cautious. “Only make a journey if it’s necessary and if you so, allow that extra time,” Sgt Cording said.
