York area named among Ofcom's second phase of local TV licence

A LOCAL TV licence is set to be awarded in York as part of a second phase of licensing, Ofcom has revealed.

The regulator has invited expressions of interest for 30 locations, including York, after awarding 19 licences, including those in Leeds, Grimsby and Sheffield, in the first phase.

The closing date for expressions of interest in the new channels is April 24 and the first successful bidders could be on air by the end of 2014.

All the first 19 local TV channels have outlined strong news and journalism elements in their proposed programming schedules.

Sadly this probably means, not only do we have to listen to James Alexander on Radio York but we will have sight of him as well.

Its enough to put you off your breakfast.

Seeing as how we've got a £30 million TV production studio installed in York Uni at the taxpayers expense, lets hope they bid for the franchise in order to show us what we got for our money.

It`s because of personal remarks like this that comments get pulled. Childish, stick to the issues.
P.S. I don`t report, just tell you what I think.

I expect it will be about as popular as the last York TV effort - how many weeks did that last?

If anyone can work out a business case for funding:

1) The installation or re-alignment of television aerials across 75% of the city to receive programmes from Bilsdale (most of York watches Emley Moor)

2) A separate, dedicated feed from the York TV station to Leeds where York's cable TV comes from - because Virgin in Leeds can't pick up signals from Bilsdale... OR

3) The construction of an entirely new Virgin Cable head end and distribution network (for the same reason - all York's cable TV comes from Leeds)

4) The legal battle - plus additional technology - to stop the existing cable provider sending Leeds local TV into York homes

5) Enough watchable locally-produced programmes to meet Ofcom's remit

... then let me know.

I can't wait.

If the York TV programmes are financed by advertisements I will avoid watching the channel.
Perhaps York Press could provide their reporting skills to York University's TV production studio and give students hands-on experience.

All a bit out-of-date. The future is TV over the internet, it's TV from anywhere being watched anywhere.

Having a TV service 'for York' just won't work now. The city isn't big enough, it isn't worth the investment and the audience is already watching something else.

If only there was a way to switch off your radio or TV, or perhaps choose another station or channel.

you could all volunteer for a tv based weekly discussion show, where you can say out loud the stuff you post in the comments section here! they'd have to put in some extra bike racks outside the studio I suppose.

And my issue is that infantile comments stop us all being able to comment at all.

Nearly had a heart attack when I saw the headline: I thought it meant that we'd have to pay for a local TV licence as well as the national one!

Great story for those who still wish to moan on any subject.
I do wonder how they managed the ability to buy a computer.
Thought they would be too busy stoking their fires for smoke signals.
