THE firm behind plans for a £1 billion potash mine on the North York Moors is holding talks with defence chiefs after they objected to the scheme.
The York Potash Project would see workings up to 1,700m deep sunk under the national park, with Sirius Minerals saying it would create more than 1,000 jobs. Landowners are expected to be paid £31 billion in royalties during the mine’s 50-year lifespan.
However, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has submitted a holding objection to the plans over fears subsidence could affect the radar base at nearby RAF Fylingdales. Sirius Minerals said it was in “ongoing dialogue” with the MoD and it was confident it could satisfy the concerns.
