CELEBRATIONS for St Patrick’s Day started early at a York pub when regulars were invited to attempt to take part in a record-breaking jig.

O’Neill’s, the Irish-themed pub in Low Ousegate, hosted the Join The Jig event on Thursday along with other O’Neill’s across the country.

Pubgoers were invited to take part in a Guinness World Record attempt for the most people Irish dancing at the same time, which stands at 10,036.

Chris Campbell, assistant manager, said about 20 people took part in the five-minute jig in York, including Michael Ingham, York City Football Club’s goalkeeper whose shirt is sponsored by the pub. Bar staff were waiting last night to hear if their bid had succeeded.

“It went really well and was part of the build-up to St Patrick’s Day on Sunday to get everyone in the mood when the world and his mate arrives,” said Chris. “We are expecting big crowds from early doors until late.”

O-Neill’s was also raising money by selling St Patrick’s Day hats for Cash For Kids charity, and will be continuing to collect donations throughout Sunday.
