Time to nominate student helpers

THE search is on for nominations for a student volunteers award scheme which recognises York youngsters who go above and beyond to help their community.

Each year, hundreds of young people carry out numerous hours of voluntary work, which improves life for people in York and which goes largely unnoticed.

On May 14, Higher York – a group representing Askham Bryan College, the University of York, York College and York St John University – will be holding a joint volunteering awards ceremony and they hope to get hundreds of entrants for the awards this year.

Jessica Grant, director of Higher York, said: “The evening of celebrations is an opportunity for giving recognition and appreciation for the fantastic work student volunteers carry out.

“The Higher York Volunteering Awards is now open for nominations and we are looking towards organisations that have students volunteering for them, to nominate.

“The awards are a unique way of thanking individuals or groups for their commitment and dedication to voluntary work.

“The awards recognise the contribution that students make to the city and the local community.

“This is the fourth year we have run them and they are a real chance to celebrate some unsung heroes. Past winners include students who have worked in schools and helping the elderly.”

If you would like to nominate by post, then email nominations@higheryork.org with your details and address so they can send out a questionnaire.

You can also contact Higher York on 01904 876350 for information.

The deadline for nominations is March 25.

They could start by moving the rubbish that they leave all over the gardens of the houses they live in. Then move onto the streets that they turn into student slums.
