It’s knit one, purl one, casting off and cable stitch at the St Leonard’s Hospice Furniture shop as its new knitting group starts clicking its needles.

The shop’s manager, Maria Aebi, is encouraging anyone – experts, improvers or beginners – to join the group. Novices are given a pair of needles and the help of an experienced knitter to get them started. The group meets on Tuesdays from 9.30am to 11.30am at the shop, at 1, The Village. It is free to join and no booking is needed. The shop also sells wool alongside the furniture – so the knitters need never run out of materials, however long the scarves they plan to knit.

Maria said: “Our friendly knitting group offers everyone the chance to learn or improve their knitting – a very useful and satisfying skill.”
