Man arrested for carrying fake gun

A MAN has been arrested for carrying a gun in York city centre.

The 23-year-old was detained in Rosemary Court near Walmgate after a 90-minute search by armed police that began following a call to police from someone near Melrosegate. A further call was made by a taxi driver.

The man was arrested at 11pm on Saturday on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm and given a caution. He was not understood to have threatened anyone, police said.

In a separate incident, a 41-year-old man was arrested on Friday afternoon after allegedly carrying a kitchen knife in the Leeman Road area, again after a call to the police from a member of the public.

He was charged with possessing a knife in a public place and will appear at York Magistrates’ Court on April 3. A police spokesman said: “The member of the public did the absolute right thing by alerting the police. Their quick thinking led to the swift arrest of the man.”
