Motorists face delays at Haxby after level crossing barrier stays down

MOTORISTS have faced delays and congestion in the Haxby area of York after a level crossing barrier stayed down - even when no trains were coming.

Vehicles unable to use the level crossing in York Road backed up to the York Outer Ring Road roundabout, causing traffic on the route to grind to a halt.

Network Rail said the problem was reported at 11.55am and engineers had arrived at the crossing by 12.20pm. Shortly afterwards, steps were taken to ensure the barrier would rise and fall safely while the experts investigated the cause of the fault.
