YORK’S annual Fairtrade Market in Parliament Street draws to a close this weekend.

Alongside traders from across the UK selling food, gifts, crafts and clothing, there will be craft workshops.

Yesterday a group of students from Access To Music put on a show featuring specially composed music by a number of acts.

The two-week festival, timed to coincide with the national Fairtrade Fortnight, has seen events taking place across the city, from Copmanthorpe to Holtby.

Coun Linsay Cunningham-Cross, who sits on the Fairtrade city steering group, said: “York is proud to be a Fairtrade city. It is great that as a city we can give the message that we support fairness and a fair day’s wage for everyone, no matter where they work.”

The sadly much reduced Fair Trade Market in Parliament St I visited yesterday does not reflect York's repeated claim to be a thriving Fair Trade City. These, like many other retail outlets, have apparently suffered from an acute lack of trade.
One can only hope that the tourism on which York relies is not similarly diminished in 2013.
