Vote in competiton to find a county flag for North Riding
8:38am Friday 8th March 2013 in News
THESE six finalists have been revealed in the contest to design a county flag for the North Riding of Yorkshire.
The competition to produce a flag for the North Riding – the area which takes in Mickle Fell, the highest point in Yorkshire, in the north-west of the county, across to Middlesbrough, down to Filey Brigg and over to York – was launched last January.
Andy Strangeway, who is behind the idea, said he hoped the flag would reflect the area’s “cultural heritage”.
The six shortlisted designs were selected from numerous entries by a panel of judges, for everyone to vote for their favourite.
Mr Strangeway plans to fly the flag at the extreme points of the North Riding in May.
Voting closes on April 2. To cast your vote, visit andystrangeway.wordpress.com/north-riding-flag

Nice idea, but - given the "Traditional Counties" were not totally abolished in 1974 (their names may still be used for "cultural purposes") and that the old North Riding had an official coat of arms - presumably said coat of arms would naturally trnslate into flag-form anyway. In other words; I suspect a North Riding flag already exists.

In a sense it still exists, as do all the other "lost" counties. The Buildings of England series is still based on the old counties. Cricket still uses the old system. (Though without the old subdivisions in Sussex, Yorkshire, Glamorgan, Lincolnshire and Suffolk) The current hotchpotch of authorities invoke no sense of loyalty to anything. The lucky ones are places like Devon and Norfolk which hardly changed and to an extent North Yorkshire which is at least big enough to create a sense of place.
