York will not be UK City of Culture 2017

YORK is not in the running to be UK City of Culture 2017 after culture minister Ed Vaizey unveiled the names of the contenders.

Aberdeen City Council sparked speculation that the Yorkshire capital was among those bidding to host a year of cultural events by naming it in a list of possible rivals.

But City of York Council denied that it was part of any bid. The contending towns and cities from across England, Wales and Scotland will have to submit their bid by the end of April, with the shortlist to be announced in June.

Damning indictment on the council. Should hang their heads in shame.

Really? I love this town, but what exactly qualifies it for UK City of Culture?

Exactly. Any attempt at culture gets shouted down here anyway - reference the recent barge vitriol.
