Woman charged over assault of four-year-old

A WOMAN has been charged after a four-year-old was allegedly assaulted in York city centre.

The 26-year-old woman has been charged with assault by beating following the alleged incident - which involved "excessive use of force" - on the footpath between High Ousegate and Coppergate at around 1.30pm on February 15.

The woman was with another young child and a man when the incident happened.

The child was not injured, a spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said.

Officers, who said they were treating the incident “very seriously”, had appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The woman is due to appear in York Magistrates' Court on March 19.
