UPDATED 8.50pm: Level crossing crash causes East Coast Mainline delays

RAIL passengers traveling between York and London were caught in lengthy delays tonight following an accident at a level crossing on the East Coast Mainline.

The crash at the crossing near Doncaster saw East Coast and Grand Central Trains services being delayed by up to 75 minutes. It also meant hold-ups for Northern Rail trains between Doncaster and Selby and for passengers using services run by other operators.

However, the accident scene, at Arksey, has now been cleared and trains are running normally, although passengers have been warned some knock-on delays to East Coast and Cross Country services are likely as congestion around the Doncaster area clears.

Took me just over two hours to get home from Leeds this evening (around double the usual journey time, leaving at 6pm) - stop/start traffic all the way along the A64 from Woodhouse Lane (Leeds) to the York outer ring road/Wetherby Road roundabout. No idea what was causing it (I didn't pass the aftermath of any accident), and no mention of any trouble on the traffic bulletins of either Radios York or Leeds.

Very busy main road and a skew crossing as well, as I recall, with CCTV operation and monitoring from Doncaster signal control centre.
