University of York pedestrian and cycle links to be improved

PROPOSALS have been drawn up by City of York Council for improving pedestrian and cycle links between the university’s Heslington West and East campuses, focusing on University Road and Field Lane.

The two roads run through the Heslington West campus, which is used by more than 14,500 students, and both sets of proposals also include shared off-road and pedestrian footpaths.

One option would see a one-way system installed on Field Lane, while the other proposes keeping the existing two-way system, but introducing a footpath on the southern side of Church Field.

The new Church Field cycle path would run parallel to Field Lane, while an additional path along the northern edge of Church Field is a possibility.

If a scheme is approved, it will be funded by the university as part of the terms of the planning permission for the Heslington East campus, granted in 2005. The consultation can be found at york.gov.uk/consultation.

Residents and students have until April 22 to give their views.

I can't see Option 1 working with one way traffic. Field Lane is used as a rat run to get to Fulford Road and beyond and back through again. All it would do would be to push more traffic on to University Way and the roundabout there does not have good visibility.

Having a raised crossing at the top of Main Street is ludicrous. Traffic will be turning into main street and immediately face pedestrian's crossing.

I agree that it won't work, but it isn't and never has been a "rat-run". It was a busy main road until the ridiculous changes put in place making traffic worse!

I'm not quite sure what changes you're on about - there's been quite a few. I've only been working at the Uni for about 8 years so you may know more than me about people trying to avoid Hull Road (both in and out) but I would agree not specifically a rat run.

I'd be happy if they just got rid of the parked cars on the uphill (if heading to Hull Road) section of Field Lane and provided a dropped kerb at the traffic lights so cycles could access the on-pavement cycle lanes....

Ideally western Main Street where it exits onto the gyratory would have measures in place to make drivers more aware of cycles too.
