North Yorkshire police stations fail to sell in auction

TWO former North Yorkshire police stations expected to raise nearly £2.5m have failed to sell at auction today.

The 1930s police station in Harrogate was expected to raise £1.9m and the former Helmsley station - which has planning consent for residential properties - had a reserve of £450,000 at the auction in Leeds.

Julia Mulligan, the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, said: “The two properties which were available through auction have attracted significant interest from a number of potential purchasers, and a number of viewings had been undertaken prior to the auction today.

“Whilst neither property reached its reserve value at the auction, meaning that the properties were not sold, auctions are an effective way of testing the market interest and we have found this to be a really valuable exercise providing us with a good basis for future negotiations. There is always a potential for ‘post auction’ offers via the auction house and these would be considered should they arise.”

Staff in Harrogate moved to a new station last year and those in Helmsley share space at the North York Moors National Park Authority headquarters.

... wishful thinking rather than testing the market - how much did that cost, for something I could have told them for free?

Do I detect the start of a trend? Chief Constable not appointed, PCC says she wishes to further test the market. Now Police Stations fail to sell at auction. PCC says its been an effective way of testing the market. How much do these 'exercises' cost both financially and in terms of man hours. Not insignificant I suspect! Will the PCC publish costs, unlikely!!

Harrogate will sell eventually. The old Police station in Bath is now a wine bar and is worth a mint.

Harrogate Borough Council bought the Harrogate one only to have listed building status imposed on it last year. They have now tried to sell it unsuccessfully. Hard lines tax payers

Revolutionary idea here Julia...but how about filling these empty police stations with...police officers?!

Sick to death of this woman destroying the NY Police Force piece by piece.

How about appointing a Chief Constable and letting them get on with your job as it always was and always should be.

Commissioners will be viewed by history as one of the all time worst decisions made by Government and affecting the Police. Disgrace.

Doesn't say much for her proposed sale of Newby wiske does it? Has this woman any property experience or for that matter Police experience. Appoint Tim Madgwick now-we don't want some
Butterfly who either flutters off somewhere else shortly after to a bigger Force(Nobes, Woodcock etc) or is discredited (Burke, Cannings, Maxwell etc)
