Selby council house tenants face cuts in housing benefit

HUNDREDS of council tenants in Selby with spare rooms could face cuts to their housing benefits.

The Press understands about 350 letters have already been sent by Selby District Council to tenants who have one bedroom which is not being used, and about 68 have been sent to tenants in properties where two bedrooms are not used.

The move is part of a Government scheme to encourage tenants in under-occupied homes to move to smaller properties, by reducing housing benefits by between 14 per cent and 25 per cent, depending on the number of unused bedrooms. Residents are then expected to make up the difference themselves, or look to transfer to a smaller property.

Council leader Mark Crane, said: “We’re contacting everyone affected by these changes, but we want to ensure you’ve as many opportunities as possible to get all the information you need about these important changes.

“This is part of a national reform to welfare, designed to support a better use of available council and other social housing, to save money nationally and to give greater powers to local councils to deliver Council Tax Support to meet the needs of each area. As part of this we’ve had to take some tough decisions about how this support is delivered, but we believe we’ve been as fair and just as possible.”

The new rules allow one bedroom for every adult couple, married or unmarried, any other adult aged 16 or over, any two children of the same sex aged under 16, any two children aged under 10, any other child or carer who does not live at the property, but provides overnight care. Pensioners will see no change to their entitlement.

A series of drop-in sessions will be held for residents with any queries about the changes, as follows:

• Today, 1pm to 3pm, Manor Farm Youth Centre, Tadcaster

• Tomorrow, 10am to 12pm, Brotherton Childrens’ Centre

• Thursday, 10am to 12pm, Sherburn-in- Elmet Library

If you are concerned about under-occupancy, you can contact your community officer by email at communityofficers@selby.gov.uk or phone 01757 705101, or alternatively visit the Customer Contact Centre in Market Cross to make an appointment.

I know we gave you the house, but now we have decided its too big for you so we are going too charge you a bedroom tax for the privilege, down sizing is an option, but we don't have enough properties to meet the current housing demand... So tough luck.....

It's the pensioner's that have bedroom's that are not being used, they are the one's that need to be moving into smaller properties.

Pensioner’s are currently exempt for the cuts (as they are more likely to vote)- but there are limited smaller properties to move to so it’s just an attack on the poor , to make them poorer. There will be no real movement in and out of property- just more people in expensive B+B that will cost more than the ‘savings’ in benefits.

why should a person move out of their home just because they are old? I'm sure they would chose to move if there were any decent smaller homes that aren't in a block of flats.
I live in a 3 double bed house but I own it so this doesn't affect me, I moved from a much smaller house because I wanted a garage and garden.

why should a person move out just because they are, err.. young, then?

No-one is being asked to move because they are old; they are being asked to move because they have unused bedrooms in their house. As others have pointed out, exempting pensioners from this makes no sense (unless you're trying to win an election), as they are most likely to have the extra space.

I'm sure they would chose to move if there were any decent smaller homes that aren't in a block of flats.

I do agree that the benefit reductions shouldn't take effect if the council cannot provide the affected family with a smaller property.

You're paying for it, not the taxpayer, and therefore you can decide to spend your money how you wish. If I wanted a flat with a spare bedroom, I'd have to pay about £1.5k more in rent a year than I am for my present (one-bedroom) flat. Why should I also be forced to pay for benefit-subsistent households to have a spare room or two?

They should move out because single pensioners living in 3 and 4 bedroom properties when they don't need them is ridiculous.

It's not the number of bedrooms I want it's a nice garden a garage and plenty of parking, I was sick of the number of times my car was damaged by having to park it in a narrow street.
It's building costs that make small houses expensive because if you double the size you get 4 times the volume, so no one builds small houses.

It was the done thing at one time, pensioners who had worked all there life and lived a council house , raised a family and the kids moved out they would then move into a nice cosy council flat , less rent , less work on it, both my grandparents moved into flats , one in field view cos my nan had had a stroke, and the other into one near the shops on chapel fields, this was of course in the early 70's , it seems all these nice cosy flats are full of unemployed chavs on benefits now, field view flats which were built for the elderly and infirm even have polish families in them now depriving the people they were actually built for..
