Petition launched to stop ‘green bin tax’ (From York Press)

I assume the desire is for residents to dump green waste in outlying ditches; because that is what they will do.
Then, of course, whilst they are taking their green waste to dump it thus, they might as well take the other-coloured waste too....

Green waste is odd in the sense that some have none at all, whilst others have lots, but then only at certain times of the year.
Why do the council not initiate a system whereby residents have optional fold-away bags, and ring the council when they have a full one, to have it collected. Afterall, most people who need a green-waste collection tend to need it at the same time of the year, so a lorry could do the rounds over the most popular seasons of the year, but probably not in winter.

I would like to know how the council will correlate who has had there green bin emptied and how will they be be charged? Someone will have to record whose bins have been emptied.Will it be a bill through the letterbox or via the council tax? Sounds like a job creation scheme to me by York council.

Is there anything to stop residents sharing a green bin ? Dividing the cost ?

Gardens are of benefit to the whole community for both visual and ecological reasons, and where there are no trees or greenery, the Council often has to step in to provide some in the public spaces and roadsides. It is also not desirable to promote the increase in converting natural ground to paved and concreted surfaces due to the increased problems with flash flooding. Has the council taken these facts into serious consideration, along with all the other negatives such as increased risk of fly tipping and extra landfill tax and CO2 from green waste ending up in landfill.

It would be interesting to know the average Council tax band of a property that has green waste collected in comparison with that of properties that don't need the service.

I'm sorry to say this but the message at the next election will be: Labour in York = More tax on the residents of York

The tory controlled P&R committee at Ryedale District Council has recommended that garden waste isn't collected at all for 3 months of the year. So even those that are willing, sorry daft enough, to pay extra to have their bins emptied, won't be given that option.

Genuine question. How did you all get rid of your green waste before Councils started collecting it a few years back? Fly tip it or dispose of it yourselves legally?

Modern dustbins have a round space about the size of a 2p coin under the front rim. This can be used by Councils to insert a chip which can include any information they wish.

If memory serves me correctly, it went in the weekly collected wheely bin and ended up in landfill, sometimes in the garden waste skip if visiting the tip with other items. CoYC has spent the last decade promoting recycling, however it now seems to be advocating a reversal as it is not a 'green' option to make a specific journey to the tip, and there is a limit to the type of material that can be usefully composted for the average garden, branches and excessive grass cuttings are not much good for a quality compost. Most people will just stack it in the corner of the garden, or sneak it into landfill now. How about paying for the collection and submitting a claim for Ward Committee funding, far more sensible than some claims I can think of.

yeah it used to go in black bags then in the bin when there was enough room.

I don't know why they're picking up green rubbish in winter, it not like people have loads to get rid of.

Fires should be banned in residential areas, my mum suffers with emphysema. They say passive smoking is bad but it's ok for the neighbors to completely envelope my house with toxic smoke ?

It's highly debatable that residents who either compost, don't produce green waste or who dispose of it legally in other ways should subsidise those who demand that a lorry turns up every couple of weeks to transport their grass clippings (incidentally I bet the same people who trundle out to garden centres to buy compost!).

Get real here. You just need to compost it or leave it in a little pile and nature does the work for you. If you choose to have a premium service, fine...but pay for it once it's been cut as a general service.

The same as the green Lib Dems that support 20mph zones nationally but not when they think they can score a few local points?

And finally, the same Lib Dems who purported to support the NHS at the last election but supported the Tory legislation that effectively destroys the NHS?

By the same token the tee total council tax payer who never has wine/beer bottles or cans and reads The Press online should not be paying for others to have their recycling collected.

I genuinely think this is a false economy by the council and will weaken the overall recycling effort, and if it is fine to take your own waste to the tip by car instead of communal collection because it suits the council, then it is fine to use the car whenever it suits the individual.

Houses with gardens are invariably worth more than those without (taking into account location) and therefore pay more Council tax, I cannot think of another Council service where the correlation between payment and use is so high.
It is also dubious to use the savings argument, as the Council are involved in several new and costly schemes of marginal benefit to the majority of residents, so it appears to be a case of cutting the recycling spend to fund, as one example, the arts.

2. If they start charging, how soon will they remove my green bin, and who do I contact to arrange it?

I have a green bin but never used it as i only use recycling boxes
Council can have it back whenever they want but try to get them to collect it..Its a joke.They are the most inefficient shambles of an organisation I have ever dealt with

2) Poor take up of charged green waste collection and increased skip and labour costs at the tip. Result; charge to enter tip.
