Work to start on A19 south of York

WORK will begin on Monday on a £1.8 million scheme to improve safety at a junction on the A19 south of York.

A three-lane roundabout will be created to make the Barlby and Osgodby junction of the A19 and the A63 safer.

The junction is currently a staggered crossroad and is a notorious accident black spot with a hazardous right hand turn.

On the eastern side, it turns into the A63 to Howden and ultimately Hull. On the western side, the road links into the centre of the village of Barlby. This stretch of the A19 carries more than 33,000 vehicles a day. Construction of the roundabout is set to last 22 weeks. During ten weeks of that time, from March 11, it will be fully closed.

Sounds like mayhem if the A19 to Selby is closed for 10 weeks. Will there be diversions or what?

With cars and HGV having different diversions, with the HGV one being a lot longer, will there be anything to stops HGV's going through Barlby anyway?

Doubt it!
Its going to be a rat run through the village. Especially due to the fact there are TWO schools in Barlby, let the carnage begin! Not one single person has been killed at this junction fro my knowledge - can we say that in 22 weeks time no one will have been killed or injured in Barlby village?

"What a negative bunch".

Total waste of money. Just needed a VERY SMALL amount of thought and a LOT LESS money to alter the existing junction structure to make it 'safer'.

Why wasn't an extra 1km added to the eastern end of the Selby bypass to go from the existing roundabout and join the A63 just east of Osgodby? Would that cost a lot more than £1.8million?

Yep, the land owner wants "shed loads" more than that JUST FOR THE LAND

Just use the Planets cycle route if you are able bodied. It will be quicker.
