Councillors want to know total bill for hosting Tour de France Grand Depart in 2014

OPPOSITION councillors want city leaders to reveal how much they expect York to pay for its role in next year’s Tour de France.

The city will host the start of the second day of Le Grand Depart – the first stages of the world-famous cycle race – next July, which could be worth tens of millions of pounds to its economy.

City of York Council has agreed to pay a £500,000 “hosting fee”, but the Liberal Democrat group said there were still unanswered questions about other costs.

They said Leeds City Council had revealed it expected to pay about £3.6 million to host Le Grand Depart’s first day, including costs for venues, event management, roads, cleaning and hospitality.

Coun Nigel Ayre, Lib Dem leisure and culture spokesman, has asked the council’s chief executive, Kersten England, and its leader, Coun James Alexander, for the full projected cost.

He said: “This is not about whether hosting the Tour is a good or bad thing, it is about being open with the public.

“One would expect York’s figure to be broadly similar to Leeds, but so far the Labour cabinet have not revealed anything beyond the initial hosting fee.

“Leeds clearly have a budget for the event and residents would expect York to have a similar business case with projected costs and income.

“Either Labour do not have one, or they do but are keeping it secret.”

Coun Ayre said the Lib Dems were seeking guarantees money for any Tour-related roadworks will not be diverted from general road maintenance budgets, and wanted to know whether York businesses will contribute towards Tour costs as they would “benefit financially”.

Ms England said Leeds had a budget estimate for their section of Le Grand Depart as the “lead authority” for the Tour’s Yorkshire stages, and other councils will be able to refine their costs when more technical details about each venue and route emerge.

She said the council expected to add to the road maintenance budget where necessary to “meet specifications” for the Tour, although any work already planned for roads on the finalised route will be paid for through existing budgets.

Coun Alexander said: “The suggestion businesses should contribute towards the costs of hosting the Tour is interesting and worthy of debate, and I am inviting Coun Ayre to present and discuss the Liberal Democrats’ business tax proposals at a future meeting of city-centre businesses and retailers.”

Please could Councillor Alexander be straight with us.

How much will it cost the York tax payer to host this bike race?

This must have all been worked out in advance and please could we know the figure, even if it is a range. Please could we also know what is being cut to pay for this. I think I roughly understand the soft benefits of hosting the race but how much of our hard cash will it cost? Thanks.

Another A&E fiasco, I'll wager the bill will be £3 million when it's over, but we'll never know as the real costs will be buried out of sight.

'Tour-related roadworks'
Have you seen the state of the roads at the moment ? Most of the competitors will likely have buckled wheels before they get out of York !

Figures from Leeds show that they are expecting to spend around £3.6million staging the event. One would expect the figure for York to be broadly similar; however, so far the Labour Cabinet have not revealed anything beyond the initial £500,000 hosting fee.

Then there's the loss of revenue to businesses as our regular tourist trade deserts us for at least a week either side of the event.

We need more long term investment and jobs coming into York is the Tour de France going to bring any of this or is it going to be another publicity event that does nothing to help York's economy and bring much needed jobs to our city? If the cost of the event is covered by the added revenue that the event is hoped to generate then fair enough but interest in our city also needs to be the main priority so that York's economy gets a well needed boost. Concentrating on the Tour de France in 2014 is one thing but what about all the other attractions that York has to offer now and may offer in the near future surely they should be the biggest priority over this possibly one off event due to take place next year.

If the the event is losing the city money then surely that is a reason for not hosting it as the city businesses could do with a boost in revenue and tourists' rather than driving them and their money away. Obviously this is another publicity event and the thoughts of the city and businesses have been neglected in the decision to host the event. Spending that kind of money on something needs some kind of return but it looks like that isn't going to be the case with the Tour de France 2014 event. More money wasted with no benefits to York other than a media circus.

Is this the place where we slate anything positive but allow Liberals to censor comment.
This paper is a bigger joke than the council.

How naive of us to think the council has any idea how much it will eventually cost or even cares.
In the long term it will not be good for York, it will cost far more than it will generate, and when it does, the council will throw it's hands in the air and say it's not their fault the event failed to match expectations.

They'll be chasing after Cardinal Wolsey's body and any other deceased notable they can find to disinter and rebury with a remote connection to York! Anything to deflect from the FOI requests on costs and expenses, to put a spin over council tax rises, precept increases, library sell offs and bin charges is welcomed with open arms by A&E. The latest in a line of sports people to make bad press surely shows you that sport is not a money maker, it's like banking in Iceland, you are going to lose money as it's a gamble.
