New signs for two York schools

NEW signs are to be installed outside two York schools with the aim of improving safety and encouraging more pupils and parents to walk and cycle.

Coun Dave Merrett, City of York Council’s cabinet member for transport, planning and sustainability, has approved proposals which will see existing signs at the 20mph zone near Bishopthorpe Infants and Archbishop of York’s Junior School being “personalised” with a “road safety-themed design” to make them more noticeable for drivers.

The plans, which were given the go-ahead at a private decision session for Coun Merrett, will also see some “duplicated” school warning signs being removed to reduce clutter in the area.

The existing warning sign with flashing amber lights will be moved from its current position to a new point closer to the infant school, a new school sign will be installed on the verge near the school entrance, and the keep-clear markings near the school will also be improved.

The scheme, which the council said had been decided on after consultation with residents, councillors, the local parish council and North Yorkshire Police, is expected to cost about £12,000.

Move in the right direction. Widespread rigorously enforced 20mph limits needed as well to increase the kids safety. Might lead to less lardy idle lumps draining NHS resources in the next generation.

Customised school safety signs... so essentially the signs will get badly coloured in smiley snails and the words 'slow down' with a backwards 'd' and all done in pencil crayon.... as if drivers think "oh look at the smiley snail, I'll not put the hammer down on my heavily modified chavmobile"

Meanwhile, how do you increase awareness of careful driving now the 20mph speed limit has been widened to the entire area? previously you put up a 20 limit around the school and drivers realised there was a school there and went more carefully, but now the special significant of the 20mph limit has been lost.
