Power cut hits 26,000 York homes

Updated 9.50pm

A POWER cut has affected electricity supplies to 26,000 homes across York tonight.

The blackout, which happened just before 7.25pm, affected homes and businesses in the YO1, YO23 and YO24 postcodes, including Acomb, Holgate, Dringhouses, Woodthorpe and Bishophill, as well as the city-centre.

A spokesman for Northern Powergrid said power supplies were restored to all the affected properties by just before 7.50pm. The fault occurred on the National Grid network, although the exact cause is not yet known.

Earlier reports suggested the number of homes affected was about 860, although this was based on fluctuating numbers for different postcode areas on Northern Powergrid's website as the fault was dealt with.

The company has now confirmed the power cut impacted on 26,000 homes.

Your 88 year old Mum's sockets must use a different type of electricity to the lights.

You could either wait for this special "socket only" electricity to come back on or call a qualified electrician to come and make sure everything is working properly - my bet is that it isn't.

Something tells me you shouldn't be messing with it at all.

Errr, is that supposed to be funny? We're not messing with it - we just checked the fuse box. Exactly the same as the one in our house. Lights & sockets are on different fuse circuits or are you too thick to know that?

yorkborn66 says...
10:36pm Wed 13 Feb 13

Modern fuse boxes have an earth trip, try unplugging all the appliances that use the sockets then switch off the main switch and turn back on, If it works switch on each appliance until the sockets stop working, then you find the problem appliance. If she has an old fuse box check the circuit breaker, (for the sockets) if the thin wire has blown replace the wire. This can happen when the socket circuit is overloaded, or a spike occurs. Hope this helps.

^ - you've probably got water ingress in the heating element.

This power cut also affected the railways, because the signalling centre that controlls signals in Leeds was in the affected area of York - so all the lines out of leeds went dead.

Always a wise idea to keep some battery lights somewhere within reach, even if all you have are bike lights.

Can we send pedallingpaul to Coventry? their take on road safety 'improvement' is the Naked Streets concept where all signs, signals, kerbs etc are removed. The idea is from Europe and is actually quite closely tied in with the 20mph concept, in that everyone 'co-operates' in the road space. If you think about it logically, if vehicles are actually driving slowly, why do you need to continually stop them in their tracks, other than for the less able bodied to cross the road? The other side of the coin, If you have good 'green man' crossings why would you need to reduce the speed on main roads to 20mph?

And why had Northern Powergrid "no idea" why it happened?

Can I suggest problems caused by 'Snow'? 'Ice'? 'Meltwater'? 'Gusty winds'? 'Heavy consumer usage on a bitter night'? Permutations of all five, perhaps?

Of course, I don't work in the power supply industry, so I might be completely wrong...

Why is it that traffic flows so much better and no pedestrians get run over when the power goes off? I mean we pay £10,000 per year maintenance for each set of lights and they actually make things worse! We could save billions without them!

Because it is unusual, therefore people are more aware and safety conscious.

I think the reason is that because there is no "overlord" to tell people when to go and stop, it puts the responsibility back into peoples' own control and then they either take more care or are more courteous for allowing other people out. If traffic is controlled by lights, most people are of the mindset of "that light will be changing in a few seconds, I want to get through it before it does"(*) and so traffic on side streets often backs up.
Personally I think some junctions could be changed to roundabouts and work fine. New Lane and malton Road for example - get rid of lane 2 outbound on Malton Road and use it for part of inbound whilst the bus lane is physically seperated by a continuous island, and with just one lane outbound then every time a car turns left into New Lane that would give chance for traffic on new lane to exit - and because there's normally less traffic on New lane than the inbound direction on Malton Road, this self-regulating approach would reduce queuing traffic on New Lane without adding to other queues (surely it'd be better than the current setup where only 4 cars get through New Lane even when there's a queue of 20, and then a red light for about 3 minutes, just over)

* > or in the case of some woman driving a First bendy bus on the 2 today at Clifton Green "that light has gone to red but I'm going to ignore it and that bloke on the bike who's starting to move as he's got a green light can see the side of my bus and wait" - it's enough bikes have to squeeze between two rows of wingmirrors now without the reduced green light time on Shipton Road prompting more people to jump the red light.
