THE British Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Service (FESS) has celebrated its first anniversary in York.

The service works in partnership with the North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue services to provide vital emotional support to victims of fires, floods and other emergencies in North Yorkshire.

The service operates using a specially adapted van which is kept stocked with hot drinks, food and clothing. It is equipped with a seated area where victims can receive practical information about finding alternative accommodation or making an insurance claim, as well as vital emotional support.

The FESS started in Acomb in York last February and since has helped more than 50 people in York and North Yorkshire.

A satellite team is starting in Scarborough this year, making it easier for the FESS to reach people in rural areas.
