YORKSHIRE Water is investing £750,000 to reduce the risk of sewer flooding in the Union Terrace area of York.

Work is about to start on the installation of a large waste water storage tank underneath the current hospital staff car park next to Union Terrace.

“The tank is approximately the size of two terrace houses and will be able to store around 1,650 cubic meters of waste water during heavy rainfall,” said a spokeswoman.

“When in use, the excess water will be held in the tank and released back into the sewer network when it’s safe to do so. The work, which is expected to be complete by August, is part of Yorkshire Water’s ongoing investment programme to upgrade our sewer network and treatment facilities across the region.”
