CHILDREN from eight schools in York, North and East Yorkshire took part in a world record breaking attempt for the most people signing and singing a song simultaneously.

Pupils at the participating schools joined in with the sign2sing event taking place in thousands of schools across the country and organised by the charity SignHealth at 2.45pm yesterday.

Youngsters at Fishergate School, Hob Moor Oaks and Hob Moor Federation, Applefields and St Aelred’s RC schools in York as well as Forest of Galtres, Green Hammerton and Sand Hutton in North Yorkshire and Pocklington CE Infants in East Yorkshire all took part.

Fishergate music teacher Rachel Teale said: “It was actually quite nerve-racking and emotional knowing that while we were singing the same thing was happening all over the country.

“The children really loved taking part.”

Steve Powell, chief executive at SignHealth, said: “More than 1,200 schools across the country and overseas have signed up and we’re pleased that schools in York, North and East Yorkshire were involved too.”

Last year 114,277 youngsters took part in sign2sing 2012 and smashed the Guinness World Record. The previous record, which SignHealth also set, was 94,489, the results of yesterday’s event will now need to be varified.
