Speakers panel launched by LGBT forum

A NEW “Speakers Bureau” is set to be launched by the York Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Trans Forum.

The forum wants speakers to raise awareness and deal with homophobic bullying in schools, and also help with staff training in organisations, businesses and institutions.

Spokeswoman Sue Lister said they could also form panels for festivals and other city activities, speak at events during LGBT History Month in February or take part in York Pride in June.

“Volunteers may be able to help with questions from the press and radio, especially with their own life experiences or in their own areas of expertise,” she said.

“Key issues which need attention at the moment are health (both mental and physical), hate crime and the invisibility of LGBT older people in care homes and their isolation in their own homes.”

She said anonymity could be preserved if required for any media interview, and support and coaching for new speakers would be available. For more information, phone Sue Lister on 01904 488870, or Matt Foster on 07976 355086, or go to yorklgbtforum.org.
