HAIR and beauty students from York College showcased their colourful creations at an event at York racecourse.

The annual hair and beauty competition involved about 250 full and part-time hairdressing and beauty therapy students at the racecourse, attracting employers, some of whom acted as judges.

Jayne Laverick, head of division for hair, beauty and holistic therapies at York College said: “This competition provides a superb showcase for the work that goes on in the training salons at York College and in local salons, where many students are working as apprentices.

“The competition gives our students a first-class learning experience. Whilst under pressure, they are tasked with using their skills to produce really excellent work.

“It is fantastic to see their training at college, and in the workplace, result in technical and creative talent.”

There was also a demonstration by hairdressing and beauty salon Watkins Wright, of Thirsk. The winning students will go forward to a regional heat in Gateshead and the winners from the regional heat will progress to compete in the national finals, to be held in Blackpool.
