THE Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) will not investigate an incident in which a pedestrian was killed in North Yorkshire.

Douglas Scott Robertson, 27, was killed in Stokesley earlier this month. The incident was referred to the IPCC after it emerged the stolen Range Rover which hit him may have been involved in two earlier incidents.

North Yorkshire Police referred the handling of the incident to the IPCC, after reviewing the circumstances leading up to the collision.

However, the IPCC has now told police it will not be investigating the incident and it has been passed back to North Yorkshire Police for local investigation.

A police spokesman said: “A full investigation into the collision is currently underway to bring those responsible to justice and at this stage there is no evidence to suggest any separate investigation into the conduct of officers prior to the collision is necessary.

“At the conclusion of the criminal investigation, when all evidence has been gathered, the force will make a decision as to whether or not any further action is necessary in relation to North Yorkshire Police’s prior involvement with the vehicle.”
