WHISKY, beer and poetry all flowed freely as Scots in York toasted their national bard.

Expats across York and the region last night celebrated the anniversary of Robert Burns’s birthday and a number of city pubs also hosted special events.

At Brigantes in Micklegate, dozens of people gathered for two events: a whisky evening in the upstairs room and a meal downstairs.

The downstairs event was organised by the York Hearts Supporters Club, which consists of exiled Heart of Midlothian FC fans.

Club chairman Ian Warner performed the traditional address to the haggis and guests also enjoyed a special ale called Marooned, which club members had produced in partnership with Scarborough’s North Riding Brew Pub to toast their football team’s victory in last season’s Scottish Cup.
