Milder weather by the weekend

MILDER, rainy weather should reach North Yorkshire by the weekend – but it could be preceded by further snow on Friday night, say weathermen.

The North York Moors experienced further snowfalls yesterday, and the A169 Whitby to Pickering road remained shut as the snow drifted in the wind.

Forecasters said there was the possibility of more snow tonight, and further frosty nights before warmer air from the Atlantic pushed in by the weekend.

Several schools remained closed in North Yorkshire yesterday because of the snow, including Fylingdales Primary, Goathland Primary School and Weaverthrope Primary, but East Yorkshire schools which were shut on Monday reopened yesterday.

A pine cone or seaweed could give a more reliable forecast than the guess work of the so called professionals - remember the hot dry weather we were promised a few years ago for the rest of our lives!

This time round the snow has been very localised.... York has got away with it quite lightly. The B6278 between Consett and Stanhope has got 12ft snow drifts and a snow blower had to come in to clear it, then the A66 has been shut for a coupld of days or more (complete with an artic truck stuck up there unable to go either direction), the southwest and wales has had it bad (even plymouth, and that hasn't had snow for years)... All York has had is about 5cm, which hasn't been an issue where roads and pathways were treated when it first fell before it got compacted. I went out and cleared footways when the snow was only 2cm thick, put down a load of grit salt, and then it snowed heavy again so I cleared the lot again and more salt down, and since then hat I have done has stayed clear and safe whilst the other footpath opposite is now a skating rink.
