WITH its narrow cobbled streets, cosy restaurants and riverside walks, York is the perfect place for lovers to take a break, according to a new high-profile national campaign.

The city is to be showcased on the web and through national newspapers and radio stations as the one of Britain’s “most romantic heritage cities”.

Bosses at Visit York, the city’s official tourism body, have teamed up with national organisation Visit England and hope to entice couples to York from cities such as London, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Plymouth.

Michelle Brown, marketing manager at Visit York, said: “We’re thrilled to be working in partnership with Visit England to highlight York as one of the top locations to book a romantic break.

“York is a city full of romance, with beautiful locations and architecture as well as an award-winning gastro scene and a wide range of independent retailers – the perfect choice for all romantics.”

Visit York said the city’s romantic appeal will now be promoted through Facebook competitions, video content and dedicated “Romantic York” pages on visitengland.com

The Guardian’s weekend travel section will also feature a full colour, wrap-around cover featuring the city, while national radio station Classic FM is also running the campaign.

Visit York was recently awarded £666,666 to produce campaigns over the next three years to encourage more Britons to holiday in the city.

James Berresford, chief executive of Visit England, said: “This exciting campaign is the first of several launching this year with the aim of growing tourism in England.

“Starting in time for the run-up to St Valentine’s Day and Easter, the campaign promotes some of England’s most beautiful historic destinations.

“This is a great example of the industry working in partnership to stimulate tourism and grow jobs throughout the country.”
