A YORK village has recognised the community spirit of its young people.

Bishopthorpe’s annual Youth Awards were this year presented to two youngsters in recognition of their dedication to village life and the wider community.

Katie Paver was nominated for her work as a Young Leader with Bishopthorpe Rainbows and Brownies. She has been recognised as an outstanding role model and also represents the local group at district planning meetings of the Girl Guiding organisation. She has also managed to achieve her Silver Duke of Edinburgh award.

Rachel Skelton was nominated for her work in raising funds by singing for several charities including Cancer UK, Alzheimer’s Society, Martin House Hospice and SNAPPY (Special Needs Activities and Play Provision for York).

Rachel also helps out at the St Andrew’s Church Holiday Club, the Quench Cafe and helped organise a children’s party in Bishopthorpe to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
