A COATING of snow turned the region into a winter wonderland at the weekend – and more snow is expected today.

At the University of York campus at Heslington, children made the most of the weather by going sledging and at Bootham Crescent, volunteers helped to clear the pitch to enable York City’s match with Aldershot to go ahead.

A 40-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital from Great Ayton after suffering a leg injury when she fell from a fast-moving sledge on Sunday morning, a spokesman for the air ambulance said.

The Brass Monkey Half Marathon which was due to take place in York yesteday was cancelled because of the snow.

Snow is expected to blanket the UK for the next week, with no end of the big freeze in immediate sight.

Heavier snow was expected this morning with 5cm to 8cm of snow due to fall across York, North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire and a further 5cm expected throughout the day.

On higher ground, 20cm is expected by this afternoon, a spokesman for weather forecasters MeteoGroup said.

There will be a bitter easterly wind today and tomorrow.
