DRESSES designed by two York fashion students have been chosen by the Lady Mayoress and Sheriff’s Lady as their outfits for a forthcoming civic ball.

The creations of Jacey Lamerton and Stephanie Pack, from York College, were picked as winners in a competition to design outfits with a “wonderful city of York” theme.

Jacey’s design will be worn by Lady Mayoress Karen Hyman, while Stephanie will be producing the outfit for Sheriff’s Lady, Jenny Firth.

Jacey, who is 42, said: “It’s quite a daunting prospect to return to education as a mature student. Winning this competition is an enormous boost to my confidence.

“I know how competitive it is out there and this is a remarkable accolade to be able to add to my CV. The competition is a wonderful opportunity for students – it’s amazing to think my first client is the Lady Mayoress of York.”

Her design was inspired by York Minster, with a two-colour draping silk in the golds and greys of the building’s iconic stone.

Stephanie, 16, a first year fashion and clothing student, came up with a full-length black velvet, off-the-shoulder evening dress which has hand-painted silk godets at the hem, inspired by the stained glass window of York Minster.

Mrs Hyman said: “Picking the winners was very difficult as all the designs submitted were extremely creative. I’m really pleased by my choice, however, and am looking forward to wearing the dress at the ball.”

The two winners will now set about producing their designs and have been presented with two tickets each to the Lord Mayor’s Annual Charity Ball on Saturday February 9, when their dresses will be worn.

Guests will enjoy a drinks reception and dinner, followed by entertainment from York’s popular party band HUGE, as well as fundraising activities.

Tickets are still available and cost £50 each. Contact the Civic office on civicenquiries@york.gov.uk or phone 01904 551011 for more.
