RAIL operator East Coast has teamed up with cycle retailer Cycle Heaven and City of York Council to offer secure cycle storage at the city’s railway station.

The store, at the south end of Platform 1, is managed by Cycle Heaven and offers enhanced security inside a gated enclosure accessible only using a special key fob.

For periods of up to one week, cyclists can check into the store through the Cycle Heaven shop on York station during its normal opening hours on Monday to Saturday, plus Sunday during the summer months.

Staff will then store the cycle inside the secure facility for £2 per day.

Those wishing to store a cycle inside the compound for more than a week can rent a key fob from Cycle Heaven to get in and out at any time. Access can be purchased on a weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual basis.

Normal opening hours, eh? As I'm a regular out on the 0700 and back any time after 2100 the new facility obviously isn't for me, using the station on a daily basis. I'll just have to put up with leaving my bike on the crime-ridden bike racks elsewhere on the station.

Typical York. Everything closes at 5 o'clock.

If you look on the Cycle Heaven website from the link on the story, you will see that you can have 24hour access.

"For periods of over a week you can rent a key fob which enables you to gain 24 hour access. A deposit of £15 is required for the fob and the rental charges are as little as 27p per day."

I sometimes use the normal racks in York Station and am told that actually they have an incredibly low cycle theft rate (certainly compared to some city centre parking). Probably because they're in constant use plus lots of CCTV.

Or more than likely, people don't bother reporting the theft as they know it is a complete waste of time.

But for people who only need to lock their bike up on occasional days are still limited to shop hours only. If you're using the station every day you can buy weekly access and get a key fob, but if for example you need to go somewhere quite far like carlisle or london whereby taking the bike with you isn't an option, you can only use the secure area during shop hours - so yet another facility that doesn't promote evening economy.
