York Against Cancer’s Silver Celebration Appeal came to a close with a chartered steam train outing from Pickering to Whitby.

About 400 people took the trip and raised more than £3,000 to round off the celebration year in style.

Ralph Magee, director of YAC, said: “Thanks to North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Tesco at Clifton Moor and the charity’s supporters on the train, the event raised more than £3,000 and a great, sunny day out was had by all.

“An amazing total of over £115,000 has been raised during the last, very special year, and this money has been used to help fund the purchase of a respite home on the North Promenade in Whitby. Cancer patients will soon be offered, on referral, the opportunity of a break there with their families or carer.’’
