A COMMUNITY-RUN York pub has launched a quest to find UFOs – but not of the alien variety.

The Golden Ball, in Cromwell Road, Bishophill, is inviting people to join a project to complete any Un-Finished Objects – any craft, clothesmaking or creative project that has been abandoned and not completed.

Sarah Jackson, a Bishophill-based textile artist, said: “Many people have the experience of beginning a creative project in a burst of enthusiasm, before getting stuck or running out of steam.

“The UFO group is a self-help forum for frustrated crafters. You can come along, enjoy a drink and a chat and possibly even get that jumper finished.”

It is the latest project at the Golden Ball, which has been taken over by the Golden Ball Co-operative Ltd, with about 180 people investing £400 each in shares.

Other projects to have been launched at the community pub include a ukelele club, blues performances and exhibitions by local artists including Baz Ward, David Patrick and Rory Motion.

Pete Kilbane, the co-operative secretary, said: “It’s about people getting to know each other in a relaxed social setting. It’s about giving the pub a different usage. That’s what it’s open for and what we are encouraging.

“The place has a really nice atmosphere. It was always a nice pub, but it’s our pub now.”

The UFO group meets every second Tuesday of the month from 7.30pm and is open to everyone.
