BRIDGES in a North Yorkshire village have undergone safety checks and remain closed after two men were injured when a pedestrian bridge collapsed.
The men were with a pheasant shooting party at High Askew, near Cropton, on the edge of the North York Moors, when the bridge gave way last Thursday.
As reported last week, a 65-year-old from the York area and a man in his 50s were hurt and taken to hospital, one by air ambulance, but Michael Wood, who organised the shoot, said yesterday they had both now been released.
He said the 65-year-old had a nasty gash to his head but had not, as had initially been feared, suffered a broken arm.
Mr Wood said he had inspected other bridges in the area with a structural expert to check their safety and they were all okay, but he was keeping them closed for the time being as a precautionary measure.
He said it appeared the bridge had collapsed because land on the banks had become so sodden and soft after the heavy rain that it had given way.
The rescue happened downstream from where 53-year-old Vanessa Robson, of Beverley, died two years ago when her Land Rover was swept away after she tried to negotiate a ford.
