History brought to life by York's museums

WEIRD and wonderful hands-on workshops promise to bring history to life for children in York this year.

Egyptian death rituals, forensic investigation and strange Victorian medicines are just some of the school workshops planned at York Museums Trust sites.

At York Castle Museum, pupils will be able to visit the newly refurbished pharmacy in Kirkgate, its Victorian street, where they will be able to try their hand at pill rolling, medicine mixing and diagnosing diseases rife at the time, before deciding on the best treatment Meanwhile, children will also be able to visit the newly renovated mill area at the Castle Museum where they will make butter using a replica butter churn among many other activities.

Amy Parkinson, learning manager, said: “This academic year we have added some new and exciting ways for children to get the most out of our fantastic collections.”

It's vital York keeps up the refurbishing, updates and changes to its exhibition areas. Nothing will improve visitor figures more than tourists knowing that a revisit to York won't find last years museums showing the 'same old' same old. Repeat customers are the secret to success in the booming leisure industry.
