When I queried this on the telephone with the Council, even they thought it was odd, but having checked, confirmed it was going to be the case. As of now, grey bin emptied - recycling still there..........

This isn't the problem, there is a backlog and they are trying their best to clear it, the problem has been created by the management. Just because some people haven't experienced the backlog doesn't mean it isn't there.

If you've rinsed the bottles/cans they won't smell and if you have to leave them outside then just cover them with something heavy so they won't blow away.

If you really don't want to leave them laying around then load them in your cars and take to one of the recycling centres yourselves......it's not exactly rocket science!!

The problem relates to those properties which would normally have had a collection on Tuesday 1st January. Traditionally in York this has been a working day for binmen, but not this year.

The initial leaflet that was issued by the Council (about 5 weeks ago) said that those who didn’t get a collection on 1st January should simply “leave their grey bins and recycling out until it was collected”.

Just before Christmas the Council put a message on their web site which claimed to list - street by street - the days (between 2nd Jan and 5th Jan) when these “missed" bins would be collected.

However on 2nd January nothing happened in many streets. The bins and recycling were already out in line with the Council’s instructions. No statement was forthcoming from the Council.

The Council late on 3rd January then published a new list on its web site (without actually telling anyone about the change) which gave a revised set of collection dates in the period up to 7th January.

The result is that on many streets rubbish has been piled outside for several days (a different issue to that experienced in terraced areas where some residents routinely do seem to put their bins/bags out early ).

Now "1st Jan" residents really don’t know whether to take their recycling back in again (to stop it getting even wetter or blowing away) or to leave it out and risk it being disturbed by "vermin".

My street is a Wednesday collection, and the leaflet and system has worked fine.

Unfortunately, lots of people haven't bothered to read it properly, and dumped all their recycling out on Wednesday, and now it's sitting on the street, stinking, and being blown around in the wind. They're not bothering to take it in when it was absolutely clear when the collections would be.

Yes but even those who have read the info properly and put their rubbish out at correct time it still hasn't been collected at correct time by council! My street clearly says on website revised schedule that rubbish is to be collected on Thursday 3rd. It is still sitting out there! So people are reading it properly but council are not collecting at the time they say! What was the point in cancelling all collections for a week and New Year's Day when they are now having to pay catch-up??

Actually, looking at the collection calendar (which I received long before Christmas) the weeks either side of Christmas were grey (refuse) collection weeks so, in theory at least, there should have been a regular bi-weekly rubbish collection for everyone except the 1/5 who have theirs collected on Tuesdays (New Years Day)....and so far, at most these people have had to wait an extra couple of days.....if their bins are overflowing so much in two weeks then maybe they should be looking at how much rubbish they are throwing away, not at the delay in collection. Yes I do have a collection calendar, and I'm perfectly capable of reading it.

Half the city got a double collection in the week you mentioned (you included presumably), the other half is supposed to have had the double collection this week. I was in the latter.

We never received a leaflet in South Bank this year, so missed that we had an early collection for recycling and rubbish the week before Christmas.

One concern is how elderly people or people without the internet are supposed to get hold of this information?

The council have stopped giving us bin liners, they're not handing out information to the masses and expect us to be OK with a council tax rise? Hilarious!

The other factor is that if you leave rubbish in the street, the council complain, send letters to everyone moaning about the fact it's a health risk and encourages rats and foxes and a threat of a fine...yet it's OK for them to do exactly that?!

Yet another reason that York council are 'rubbish' at what they do.

The collection information was issued in advance and was available on the website. The collection information is sent out every year listing all you need for the year.

Lucky you! the council website says collections will be back to normal next week but dont hold your breath! as they havent been for our black bin today as promised then we will be a fortnight before we get it collected

Between 1997 and 2010 council tax went up over 100%, during that time services were cut year after year, executive wages rocketed, non jobs and quangos appeared out of nowhere, I paid a fraction of what I'm paying now when it was the old rates system, everything was hunky dory on the bin men front, regular collections, I have not seen York like this since the winter of discontent, this is nothin to do with cuts as you put it, this is down to an incompetent council and James Alexander and his cronies should do the council tax payer a favour and step down! They really are "rubbish"

Just takes a bit time? You're very ignorant. I have legs yeah but I can't physically carry the heavy recycle boxes. I have a walking disability but that's beside the point. It's not much to ask to just expect what the residence have been told. If someone would have done their job right we all wouldn't be in this mess in the first place. Black bins have eventually been picked up yesterday (Saturday) at 8am but the recycle is still unemptied. Tuesday the 8th is black bin again so I don't know if they're going to pick the boxes up too or not? The waiting game continues....

So if collections go 'back to normal' next week, this will mean a lot of people will be going 4 WEEKS without recycling getting emptied. Huntington being one area - this likely extends to Strensall too.

Minsterred: why should people have to consume petrol and drive to the tip because the council is too incompetant to empty peoples' bins and recycling on the same day?? And what about those who don't have cars...?
