A TEENAGE boy suffered a broken jaw after he and a friend were hit by a car in an accident while cycling along a North Yorkshire road.

The collision happened at about 5.15pm yesterday on Hirst Road, between Temple Hirst and Hirst Courtney near Selby, and involved a silver Vauxhall Corsa.

North Yorkshire Police said the driver of the car, an elderly woman, stopped at the scene and asked the boys - who are both 16 and from the local area - if they were hurt before continuing her journey.

The teenagers made their way home, but were later taken to York Hospital for treatment. One of them was kept in overnight after suffering the jaw injury.

Traffic Sergeant John Lumbard, of North Yorkshire Police's roads policing group, said: "We need to speak to the driver of the Corsa as a matter of urgency so we can establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision.

"Although the woman driving the car stopped briefly at the scene of the accident, I urge her to come forward and help us with our enquiries."

The force has also appealed for anybody who saw either the cyclists or the Corsa around the time of the collision to phone 101, select option two and ask for Traffic Constable Iain Atkinson or Tadcaster Roads Policing Group. They can also e-mail iain.atkinson@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.
