Council proposes shorter tenancies

SHORTER tenancies in council homes could be offered in the Selby area under proposed changes to the way the district council manages its housing.

The authority is asking people their views in a consultation, which runs until February after which the feedback will be reviewed and used to update the tenancy policy, to come into effect by summer.

Existing tenants would not be affected.

Most of the council’s lettings are currently lifetime (secure) tenancies. Under the new scheme, most applicants will be offered a five-year fixed tenancy. There would be a 12-month introductory period as now, and then the five-year period would start.
