IT was a New Year’s Day with a difference for the parents of the first baby born at York Hospital in 2013.

Maxwell Baxter-Kershaw arrived at 7.52am this morning, born to Abbie and Nick Baxter-Kershaw, of Hillam, after Abbie’s waters broke on Sunday.

Nick, 41, said Max had not been expected to arrive until Wednesday, but birth was induced at 3pm on New Year’s Eve.

He said: “It was pure fluke he ended up as a New Year’s baby.

“We’re a bit shell-shocked at the minute, a bit numb. We’ve got no hangover, which is unusual for a New Year’s Day.”

Abbie, 30, said: “It was a very different New Year’s to most previous ones. I’m very tired, but me and the baby are doing well.

“He hasn’t been out of my arms since he was born, I’m not letting go.”

Max was born weighing eight pounds, which Abbie said was not a surprise: “We left the gender a surprise, but I guessed the weight and sex exactly right from the first scan. I didn’t put any money on it though!

“Nick’s brother has two boys and one on the way, so we’ve added another boy to the Kershaw clan.”

Family members travelled to York Hospital from around the region, with Nick’s parents coming from Leicestershire to see their new grandson.

Nick said: “They are both doing fantastically well, and they’ve both got smiles on their faces.

“Unfortunately though, I think he’s got my features more than Abbie’s. Looks like he’s got wavy dark hair, a chubby little face and he’s looking like the spit of me at the moment.”

Nick and Abbie said they wanted to thank the staff at York Hospital, for all their support and help.
