York revellers can see in the New Year with a film outside the Minster

A FILM looking back at the York 800 celebrations of 2012 will be screened in Duncombe Place tomorrow night as crowds gather near the Minster to see in the New Year.

The film will be shown between 10pm and 12.30am on a big, mobile screen that has been touring round the city to give everyone a chance to re-live major events of the year, including the Queen’s Jubilee visit, York City’s return from Wembley, the Olympic and Paralympic flames’ journeys through the city and the Mystery Plays.

But the screening may not be quite what residents were expecting when City of York Council chief executive Kersten England spoke out in November last year about her hopes for this New Year’s Eve.

She said then that a New Year community celebration might be staged near the Minster as part of the York 800 festivities, with performances taking place on a stage to give people a focal point for the countdown to midnight.

She said that as a Scot from Edinburgh, she knew what could be done on New Year’s Eve and she hoped organised activities in York might help deter antisocial behaviour on the night.

A council spokeswoman said that the screening of the film was a planned and inclusive community event for all to enjoy.

“It means that the celebration of the years events goes on longer than New Year’s Eve and is taken to different parts of the city so that everyone can have a chance to join in,” she added

instead of a highly edited back-slapping promotional film (bet it doesn't feature the illuminating york fiasco) how about some live music and/or a light display on the minster (seeing as the suggestion of fireworks is out of the question due to space and other logistics)

If you follow the links on the council's website to this film, you'll see that it's not so much a flim as a slide show tarted up with some zooming in and panning across.

I'd have liked to hear a bit more detail about the proposed entertainment - it might yet tempt me away from my planned snooze-fest in front of the telly.

Have a quick view of the film, then off to the White Horse on Bootham for the NYE Karaoke, been going for the last 6 years, it's the funniest thing in York, with a great atmopshere... I would advise all to try, great bear, great York people and none of the trouble you get in town

I hope it's better organised than two years ago when the 'entertainment' was so poorly organised it ran over into the midnight chimes. People are quite capable of making their own entertainment outside the Minster. We don't need the heavy hand of the council to try and organise something different dor us.

I've just watched the York800 Finale video and, now that I've woken up after being put to sleep by the continually monotonous commentary, can I just ask a couple of questions....

1) How much did this council slap-on-the-back-con
gratulations cost? I could've done better with my camera and laptop...at least I would've included some actual video to show the atmosphere of the crowds and, when talking about the music, why not actually include some???

second question....where were all the astounding events we were promised for York800?

The video highlights include the Olympics and Jubilee highly featured, as they could be by every other city in the country...we had the Illuminating York fiasco (amazingly made to sound good and highly enjoyed in the 'video').....a new Lord Mayor.....Democracy Week (a euopean-wide event!)....festival of angels (an annual event, and was anything special done for York800?) .......only a few events were actually unique to York and actually celebrated York800

Where were all the actual events that could've been organised to celebrate York800 uniquely in York??? (and if they were organised, why aren't they featured in the 'video'?)

The "introduction to York800" and "Ebor Vox" videos both seem like professionally made items, but the "York800 Finale" 'video' maker should be given a new job....and it shouldn't be shown at the Minster tonight unless you want all the revellers to fall asleep before midnight........

A film! For one and a half hours in this pouring rain!

Probably be a damp squid as has previous attempts to hold events in York.

Mind you the torch relay was quite something though. Don't mention the firework night or Christmas grotto.
