Cycling’s ‘spiritual home’ wants role in Tour De France

A NORTH Yorkshire MP has called for the route of the Tour de France to include his constituency when it comes to the region in 2014.
Yorkshire’s bid to host the opening stages, known as the Grand Depart, of the world-famous cycle race was confirmed as the winner in the bidding process earlier this month, and although Leeds will be the host city, the route will also pass through York, Scarborough and the North York Moors.
Speaking in a Westminster Hall debate about the event, Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones said the “correct answer” to questions about which constituencies should be included in the Grand Depart was “through Harrogate before heading to Knaresborough, then Boroughbridge and various other villages”.
He said Harrogate, where the Cyclists Touring Club was founded, was a “spiritual home” of cycling and the town had a “great claim” to be part of the tour.
