TWO residents who falsely claimed thousands of pounds in benefits have appeared in court.
Michael Bradford, 31, of Kirkgate, Sherburn-in-Elmet pleaded guilty to fraudulently claiming £11,081 of Housing Benefit while living in Kelcbar Way, Tadcaster, from Selby District Council.
He was given a community order to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work, and ordered to pay court costs of £200.
Leona Brown, 32, of Brackenhill Lane, Brayton, pleaded guilty to failing to inform the council and the Department For Work and Pensions of a change in circumstances, resulting in overpayment of benefits totalling £15,720.
The charges relate to a period when the defendant resided at Field Avenue, Thorpe Willoughby and received a large lump sum payment which affected her eligibility to receive benefits.
She had received overpayments of housing benefit of £7,681, Council Tax benefit of £1,118, Job Seeker’s Allowance of £4,965 and Income Support of £1,954.
She was given a community order to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, and ordered to pay £200 costs.
