Computers and laptops are stolen in Heworth raid

9:25am Wednesday 5th December 2012

THREE homes were broken into in York after windows and doors were left unlocked.

Laptops were stolen from two student flats in Heworth and jewellery was taken from a house in Holgate.

Police have urged residents to secure their homes. They say unlocked doors and windows account for nearly a third of all burglaries, and they have begun anti-burglary patrols.

Officers will look out for vulnerable properties, including those with unlocked doors, and will leave a calling card if they spot homes at risk. Det Insp Ian Dyer, of York CID, said burglaries rose at this time of year.

He said: “With Christmas just a couple of weeks away, thieves know homes will be filled with expensive gifts and will be on the lookout for unlocked doors and windows, gifts on display under the Christmas tree and houses left in darkness.
