Travel planners on the road to York
9:04am Tuesday 4th December 2012 in News
TRAVEL planners from York businesses are being given the chance to play their part in solving journey problems at an event in the city this week.
The networking session is being run through City of York Council’s iTravel York programme and will allow firms to swap ideas and look to team up on possible initiatives such as business parks, cycle challenges and shared parking.
The authority will also outline the incentives it offers to businesses wanting to promote sustainable travel among their workforce.
The event will be held at the Monk Bar Hotel between 8am and 11am on Friday. Speakers will include Lynn Cramman, travel plan co-ordinator for Cobalt Park, the UK’s largest business park, and Ginny Leonard, development officer for cycling charity CTC.

Only by being bold and innovative will we avoid falling behind our competitors.
My premise is simple. The roads must be free-flowing for essential users. I include taxis, buses, delivery vehicles and essential private car journies in this.
In order to do this, there needs to be a concerted and sustained effort to provide alternatives to the car for those willing and able to use the alternatives.
So...coordinated quality bus services, excellent rail services, European standard cycling facilities, high quality pavements and walking routes.
This is the way to keep the roads moving as shown by several European countries.
My fear, is that I've been hearing of innovative travel planning conferences for decades now. All too often, they lead to small, short term, timid changes. Enough to annoy the usual suspects but far too timid to achieve meaningful gain.
The fools who think that by blocking the alternatives (walking, cycling, public transport) they will free up the roads must be faced down before they further destroy our economy.
A big change here should be that the wiser taxi-drivers, bus companies, delivery companies must actively support walking, cycling, public transport...and loudly. Many of the people clogging them up in queues of traffic would switch to alternatives if they were better.
Until we make these bold changes, stop being so frightened of change, start thinking long term and work together, we are stuck in congestion-related decline.
Once innovative, York's transport system is failing the city by being too timid...time for bold action.
Magicman!

At present the 757 Airport bus to Leeds Bus Stn and the Coastliner service (the evening service) arrive and depart at the same time - a 5 or 10 minute delay in the coastliner service would avoid passengers having to wait 1 hour until their next service.
