SHOPPERS showed that every little helps as they donated generously to York’s new food bank.

Volunteers from the bank, based at Gateway Church in Acomb, collected donations at the Tesco stores at Clifton Moor and Askham Bar on Saturday and Sunday, as part of a nationwide venture between the supermarket and The Trussell Trust, which runs banks nationwide.

Caleb Ellwood, from the food bank, said shoppers had been extremely generous and the collection, combined with other recent ones at Waitrose and Morrisons in York, had allowed them to build up a good supply of food for the coming months.

The food bank aims to help families struggling to feed themselves during short-term economic crises.
